Don't Miss the Monthly Bird Walks at Lick Creek Park

Are you looking for something different to do?

Then enjoy free monthly bird walks at Lick Creek Park.

They're led by the Rio Brazos Audubon Society, and species that may be spotted include:

Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Yellow-crowned night herons are relatively small birds with stocky bodies and short legs. They display cloudy gray feathers and a creamy yellow crown, and in flight, their wings are broad and rounded. These birds are commonly found in salt marshes, mangroves, and forests, and usually stalk their prey in or near shallow water. Listen for their harsh squawk call that may be repeated a few times per second.

Broad-winged Hawk

Broad-winged hawks are compact raptors that have large heads and chunky bodies. They're identified by their reddish-brown feathers and barred underparts and are often seen soaring through the air. These birds are vocal, and entertain bird watchers with their plaintive, high-pitched whistle that last two to four seconds.

Willets are charming shorebirds with wings that are broader and rounder than those of many shorebirds. During the summer months, they are mottled gray, brown, and black, while in the winter, their feathers are plain gray. Willets are generally spotted alone, and when startled, they make a piercing call.

Downy Woodpecker

Downy woodpeckers are easily recognized as they feature a straight chisel-like bill, blocky head, and wide shoulders. Their feathers are black and white, and males have a red patch on the back of their head. These birds move more acrobatically than larger woodpeckers, and they make a lot of noise drumming on trees. Both males and females have a whinnying call, which is commonly heard during the breeding season.
