Visit Sam Houston National Forest this Autumn
Autumn finds residents of Rise at Northgate hard at work hitting the books as finals loom closer. Cooler weather makes it a little easier to hole up inside in front of screens and books, but good mental health and optimum stress management require plenty of rest and relaxation, too.
A Stanford University study shows that getting out in nature may be vital for good mental health. Walking in nature can reduce depression; it's a proven stress-reliever; and it's central to human wellbeing, according to the study. The good news is that the Sam Houston National Forest is just an hour drive from our apartments in College Station, Texas, and it offers numerous opportunities to get out in nature and enjoy the crisp air and changing leaves.
Take a Hike
Sam Houston National Forest covers 160,000 acres and is home to the famed 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail, which avid hikers have dubbed the "Jewel of Texas." The trail features over a dozen access points, and the 40-mile Lake Conroe portion of the trail invites you to enjoy the offerings of the water while you're at it.
Enjoy the Lake
Lake Conroe spans 20,000 acres and lies on the San Jacinto River in Montgomery and Walker counties. Here, you'll find opportunities for sporty activities like fishing, boating, and swimming, or you can lay down a quilt and lie in the autumn sun, listening to the waves lap against the shore. Life is good.
Stroll Historic Conroe
The city of Conroe lies just southeast of Lake Conroe, and it's a great place to grab a bite to eat after a long day of exploring the forest. Conroe's historic downtown district features lots of local and chain options, from burgers at The Corner Pub & Deli and seafood pasta at Villa Italia to authentic Mexican at Carmelita's Restaurant and spicy pork barbecue at Dosirak Korean Cafe.
Make it a Weekend Getaway
There's plenty of affordable lodging in and around Conroe if you decide to make a weekend of it. Nearly every major hotel chain has a property in Conroe, and you can find cabins, bed-and-breakfasts, and camping grounds in the area.
